The August 2002 EPISTLE from Charisma Ministries
"Being led by God, The Inward Witness."

Most Christians wish to be led by the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit), but never figured out how. In addition to just following the Bible’s direct teachings, there are three ways that God leads people. These three ways are the inward witness, the inward voice, and the voice of the Holy Spirit.

The primary way that God leads us is by the inward witness or inward intuition. God, as the Holy Spirit, living within us will speak to our spirit. Then we have an understanding of what God’s will is! Our mind was not involved, our physical feelings were not involved; but our spirit heard from God and let our mind know. Many times we think we just thought up the idea that God has given us. In Romans 8:14 we read “For as many as are led by the Sprit of God, they are the sons of God.” Under the New Covenant (New Testament) we are not led by prophets, but by God directly.

When one considers following the inward witness, a scripture comes to mind, Psalm 18:28-- “For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.” God gives us “inspiration” as an answer to our question and as help in a decision. This inner light seems like just “me.” Well, it is “me,” the real me, the re-created spirit that is in each of us.

The second way God leads is by the inward voice. In Romans 9:1 we read “I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit.” We call this the still small voice. We are led by our re-created conscience. (2 Corinthians 5:17). The life of God is inside us. This is the “everlasting life” mentioned in John 3:16 and many other places. Many times we turn a “deaf” ear to this voice because we don’t want to do what God wants us to do.

The third way God leads is by hearing God speak inside us. We may look around to see who else is in the room, wondering who just spoke. This voice is more authoritative. As I said, this is the third way God leads. Most of the time He uses the first way, sometimes the second way, seldom the third way. We must not require God to perform for us. He may not speak out loud to you. We must never tell God what to do.

After you “hear” you need to check all messages with the Holy Scriptures. In 1 Thessalonians 5:21 we read “Prove all things…” We must check with the Bible to be sure the message we got is from God. The devil wants to mislead us by using the above means, claiming to be God. In subtle ways Satan does lie to us. Find Satan out by applying the light of the Word of God to your message. Then when you sure that you heard from God, you should quickly obey.

Blessings are on you. Pastor Jones
